The Brief
Karma Currency was in the process of becoming a registered charity when they first approached Spin Communications (now WeAreDigital) in 2006.
The brief was to create Australia’s first online charity gift voucher portal where people could buy a gift voucher for family and friends, who could return to the site to redeem on a gift or donate money to a charity of their choice.
The Solution
Given the unique requirements of the project, Spin developed a customised website platform for Karma Currency.
Visitors are able to purchase a karma currency voucher, sending this onto family and friends via email, PDF or printed cards, with a personalised message and a unique voucher code attached. Recipients are then able to search and browse through hundreds of charities to purchase gifts or make direct donations, with the option of topping up their vouchers to give more.
A gift registry allows users to select their favourite charities and email friends who can buy gifts or donate on the site for a special occasion.
The website has a complex CMS with customised workflow so the client can control what charities participate and review their profiles and gifts before publishing to the site. Custom reports also allow the client and charities to view how much has been received in donations.
My Involvement
After pitching on and winning the business, I initiated an in-depth Discovery phase to identify all of the requirements, audiences, workflows and additional ATO reporting regulations for the business.
I then managed the project from start to finish.
Responsibilities included:
- Project planning and specification
- Information architecture and wireframe development
- Resource planning and coordination
- Managing design and development process
- User acceptance testing
- Training the client on the CMS and payment gateway
- Ongoing support and maintenance
