It’s official, Magento has finally announced on their blog the date that they will stop supporting the Magento 1.x platform, which is now set in stone for June 2020.
We reported back in June 2017 that Magento had extended their support for Magento 1.x from the original cut-off date of November 2018, promising they would give merchants 18 months notice to help them plan for the move to Magento 2 or another platform.
Here’s what they had to say.
“For Magento Commerce 1 (Enterprise), we are providing software support through June 2020. Depending on your version, software support may include both quality fixes and security patches.”
“For Magento Open Source 1 (Community), we are providing software security patches through June 2020 to ensure those sites remain secure and compliant.”
The big risk for merchants who are still on Magento 1.x after June 2020 is that Magento will no longer be releasing security patches and your site will get hacked.

I’m on Magento 1.x, what should I do?
No doubt most merchants in Australia will be busy planning for the 2018 Christmas period with a full calendar of site optimisation and campaign activity, so now may not be the best time to start the move to Magento 2.
You’ll need to start at least planning for the re-platform project in the first Quarter of 2019 and have it fully scoped and quoted by June 2019 in time for the next financial year.
There’s a lot to be excited about with Magento 2, giving merchants access to a host of new features and functionality, most noticeably much-improved performance and mobile experience.
